A study conducted by a research group from the University of North Carolina has shown an interesting link between the occurrence of breast cancer and physical activity. It seems that exercise results in a rather dramatic decrease in breast cancer risk, which is relevant for those wishing to remain healthy. Although previous research already showed a correlation between exercise and breast cancer, the researchers from North Carolina made the effort to find out exactly what difference it makes.
Numbers
In their study, the scientists investigated a group of around 3000 women, half of which were diagnosed with breast cancer. Physical activity was retrospectively analysed, in order to be able to put a number on the reduced risk that it provides. What they found is a decrease in the risk of breast cancer by 30 percent for those that managed to exercise between 10 and 19 hours per week. While this represents a rather active portion of the population, it is good to note that mild physical activity also leads to a reduced risk, albeit less significantly.
Weight
While there is a clear relationship between physical activity and the reduction of breast cancer risk, there are more factors that are of influence and need to be assessed. The scientists found that women who, despite their physical activity, increase in weight, have an increased risk of developing breast cancer. That means the beneficial effects of exercising become rather irrelevant if women do not manage their weight.
Outlook
These findings are important for prevention of breast cancer, which is a common and often deadly form of cancer. It is obvious that exercise is healthy for a variety of reasons, but the present study makes it even more relevant to those concerned with their risk of developing breast cancer. Previous research revealed that drinking red wine can reduce the risk as well. Novel therapies to treat the disease include the use of futuristic nanotubes, or a method that involves starvation of malicious cancer cells.
